All We’ve Got
by Jason Tomlinson

If you’re willing to listen if you’re willing to hear
if you’re willing to consider the distance between what’s far and near
if you can give an ear to the one who won’t do the same for you
then hope may yet remain despite this challenging view
because maybe none of us saw this coming maybe none of us could’ve made the prediction
of how severe the divide has become - our hate - it's an addiction
because maybe we know better but maybe we just want one more hit
maybe it's impossible to stop maybe we just can’t quit
hate is so attractive hate fuels our opposition
hate is the power that unites our side and vilifies our opponents position
but it’s such a double edged sword that always cuts both ways
and there’s nothing to be said that will make it better no paragraph sentence or phrase
but eyes and ears doing exactly what they were made to do
seeing and hearing - listening is the way to get through
can you listen? will you listen? will you entertain your opponents voice
will you sit down as one human to another and make the impossible choice
of unclenching your fists and opening your hands
to hold conflict and clashing demands
fear and joy disgust and relief
cynicism and optimism gratitude and disbelief
trust and disappointment security and devastation
blessing and numbness nausea and vindication
feel the weight of the conflicting responses and consider how best to step next
let wisdom and discernment govern your moves how you speak how you write how you move how you text
and see yourself in your opponent’s eyes otherwise we’re caught
I beg you - listen - please it’s all we’ve got
