Back to the Basics
by Jason Tomlinson
When distractions become so attractive
that my impulses become so hyperactive
it’s time to wind it back a decade or two
and remember what first made me true
because the basics haven’t been rearranged
basically the basics are still the same
it’s that the departure I took clouded my view
and my perspective on the basics couldn’t get through
until I removed what was in the way
to discover they’d been here every day
what a sweet observation to be able to taste this
feels so good to get back to the basics
