Some adventures change us in ways that cannot be undone
accomplishment leads us beyond the setting sun
to lands far away and sights unexpected
but we succeeded and good was directed
toward those that needed assistance
we finished the work with tenacious persistence
but when we came home we were caught unaware
that in such comfort it was weird to be there
not that anyone or anything was mean in any way
nor did anyone have an unkind word to say
but we were different from the moment we came
for adventures never leave its participants the same
it changes them forever all women and men
we go home in body only for our hearts can never return again

I just saw the third Hobbit movie yesterday and this poem is my first response to it. The only journey that was longer than the trip from the Shire to The Lonely Mountain was the trip that transformed Bilbo into one extraordinary hobbit.
